Why I joined the Army National Guard
I was raised on the values of caring for your neighbor and protecting those who cannot protect themselves. I was put into boxing at an early age and taught to fight my way out of hard situations. I also learned that a steady exercise routine can be a form of therapy in itself. I wanted to give back to my country.
I wanted to serve since I was a young boy, and I always knew one day I would. I joined the Army National Guard as a 65D, a physician assistant. My mission was simple: help as many people as I can through difficult times.
I helped service members who carried heavy experiences home from deployments. I helped soldiers who were injured and were at times reluctant to ask for help. I helped service members living with post traumatic stress who were reliving what they had been through.
Service also taught me about remembrance, and about standing with people in their hardest moments. That is the same heart I bring into every visit: listen first, take people seriously, and help them get through difficult times.
